The ship selector is now fully functional! We have two different working ships that can be bought and flown. Two may not sound like a lot but the way the script is made dropping the other small ships in game will be easy. But before we go wild and drop all the small ship's in we are going to change focus and get the guns on the ships working. Here is a picture of the two ships flying side by side in game. http://tectuma.com/pics/twoships_shipslector.jpg

One thing I here over and over about why not make a MMO is that if they get big they require a lot of CPU power. I do not think that is going to be a problem. This is just ONE stack of servers that we have ready to go once we get to that point.

Here is a picture with the door open as you can see we still have some room and right now we have plenty of power.

We took a break from the code and moved the Tectuma's back end servers into their new home. It was a nice happy fit with room to grow. We saved the 8' rack that it was in for a private cloud environment once we need the power.

We found out that it is kind of hard to write a script to change ships when we only have one ship in the game so far. So we are adding the “Jovian Droa” sooner than planned! This ship should be in game soon...

The ship selector is now in. Now to add the code so you can launch your ship into space and we can start adding new ships to Tectuma! Will not be long now!

Tectuma servers are getting a new HOME! A 5 foot Dell Rack with all the bells and whistles. I would like to give a HUGE thanks to Kevin, Nick, Brandon and Bart for helping get this monster to our house. And a special thanks to Stacie for putting up with a geek like me, dragging things like this home. I think she will just be happy to get rid of my 8 foot rack (Looking a little dated after 15 years). This almost new rack was going to be sent to the dump when I found it. This is a pic of the youngest member of Tectuma enjoying the new Rack (Have not told him yet that it is not his toy, LOL). We are just about ready to do a new push live were players will be able to buy ships too!

I know that we have not posted an update in awhile. A new version of the game engine that we are using came out so we stopped to upgrade and to make sure that our current code works with the new engine. We will soon be rolling full steam ahead with new code and more work on the game.

Well we have some bad news and some good news. The bad news is that we had a major server crash. It was our VM server taking with it around 10 virtual computers. The good news is other than the headache it caused we did not lose anything!

When we started building out Tectuma two things were very high on the list of things to make sure of.

1) Being able to expand it up but also out with redundancy.
1. Up means that if push comes to shove and I had to move to back end to faster computer at a moments notice.
2. Out means that I could divide the back end up to many many smaller parts to go on more than one server as needed and still have it flow as one game.

Well the planning payed off big time. With the VM server crashing it was a worst case scenario. Our entire production gone in a blink of an eye. Within one hour and two spare computers ( 1 windows and 1 linux ) we were able to get the back end server up and running. We did fine one little got ya. The data base connection were built into the server builds so we had to close down space travel until I rebuild them with the new connection string. But before we do that I am going to move the data base connection strings to a config file so next time they will not have to be rebuilt.

Talk about trial by fire...

The big changes that have happened since last week is we got a good part of the inventory built out. It still has to be hooked to the master server and the database so that your changes reflect on all the other players clients and that the changes you make or saved. Right now you can move items with putting them into the inventory, place items in the inventory, drop items out of the inventory and equip items. The next step is getting the guns to work then I will hook the inventory to the master server.

Since this happened we decided to go ahead and allow the players a sneak peak of the unfinished inventory system. Feel free to play around with the items and take a look. Just ignore the duck.

Right now the game is playable on the Face book Community Page. ( Level load times are still slow this is an issue that we are aware of and moving to fix ).
